As the holidays slowly wind down and the countdown to routine begins, I’ve found myself reflecting on these past few weeks — not from a warm European destination or a bustling workplace, but right here at home. With no flights to catch or many shifts to clock in for, I had time to sit and reflect on my usual habits which often slip by without notice. One of which was the amount of time I spend on my phone.
It became clear how often I’d fill silence with scrolling, or turn to my phone the moment boredom set in. So, I challenged myself to do a digital detox. No more endless Tiktok loops or mindless Instagram refreshes, while I waited for a new dopamine dose. At first I didn’t really know what to do with all that time. But slowly, I reflected on what I used to do when I wasn’t so reliant on my phone for entertainment. And I thought I’d share these things with you as well. Now a lot of these suggestions may seem generic but when your mind is so used to getting an instant hit of dopamine from a short video, it’s hard to think clearly. Some things I did were:
- Trying new and delicious recipes – you probably have a list you’re yet to get to
- Curating your future lifestyle – vision boards, budgeting, creating goals… whatever helps you visualise the life you want
- Cleaning your room – organising drawers, decluttering shelves, refreshing your space can make a huge difference to your mindset
- Getting active – whether it’s playing a sport or doing a home workout , it genuinely helps wind your brain down at night
- Planning a self-care day – one that’s fully dedicated to you, with no pressure to be productive
- Consuming long form media – like watching a film with intention or picking up a book you’ve been meaning to read
- Creating your own forms of media – experimenting with an editing software, making a new playlist, writing poetry, journaling, or making your own magazine spreads
None of this is about being hyper-productive. It’s just about reconnecting with the parts of yourself that aren’t constantly plugged in. And honestly, stepping away from the screen for a while gave me more than just extra hours — it gave me clarity. 🙂
