Tucked away in the busiest street of Surry Hills is a terrace transformed into a gorgeous cafe– ellu. Try not to mistake it’s quaint size and neatly decorated interior for overpriced and basic food– because inside, you’ll find meals and drinks that could seriously upstage some of the most reputable restaurants Sydney has to offer.
Upon entry, you’ll be offered to dine upstairs or remain at the front of the house– I urge you to access the upstairs, and enter a well-lit floor with subtly open windows that’ll allow you to listen to the hustle of Surry Hills below. The ambiance is further layered by the slow and quiet jazz that’s played, providing the perfect backdrop for all sorts of conversation.
Although some may deem it small, their menu offers well thought out and crafted meals to satisfy mid-day hunger. I can vouch for the crab pasta, which contained the most tender and soft crab meat seasoned to perfection in the tomato sauce of the pasta.
For dessert, their cheesecake was perfectly dense, with a hint of sweetness (just how I prefer it), making it a pretty heavy last course. Hence, Ellu makes the perfect choice for a casual lunch or a mini celebration– the ambiance and hospitality match their incredible cooking.
